I am having conversations with my clients and prospects daily about Cyber Security. As an technologist it is important to be aware of the latest threats. As a business owner it is not. There is already so much you need to worry about. Worrying about something that is so abstract as hacking or ransomware seems trivial.
I realize knowing what I know and the different ways things can go wrong, the world is a much scarier place. You see a hacker only needs to get it right once to succeed. But, as my clients Managed CIO I need to get it right every time.
The conversations I have with prospects include;
– Why it is important not to be running an outdated operating system.
– Why you need an endpoint protection on your computer. That does more than just look for viruses
-Why its still important to make sure your computers are patched
– Why you need to have a firewall in front of your modem.
-Why you need to change your passwords at least every 45 days or turn on 2 factor authentication
And the list goes on. When I use the phrase “Your Data” it is so abstract no one understands what that means. So recently I read an article which opened my eyes up so I wanted to share some statistics that I discovered. I think by monetizing what “Your Data” means. It will makes it easier to understand why Cyber Criminals do what they do.
On the Dark Web(if you don’t know what the dark web is you can see my video) cyber criminals will sell the data they steal
Email addresses can be bought from $1 to $15 per email address. You might ask why? Those stolen email addresses can then be used to spam and phish people you know. Which will further allow them to exploit and gain more data
Company Login Credentials:
Company login credentials can be bought for $30 per credential. This one should be obvious. The quicker they can gain access to your corporate data. The faster they can get financial records, social security numbers, names and addresses.
$35 for prescription records. Selling drugs on the dark web is huge. So if they can get everything they need to get legal prescriptions and sell them illegally.
Hackers finding vulnerable small businesses make up 60% of current attacks. I hope you have found this information eye opening. If you have any questions please contact us at 570-243-9205. You can use the connect to the bottom right of your screen for instant chat.
