Our Process: Meeting the Challenge of Today’s Business

When we speak to most businesses. They will lump us in with the computer repair shop or the office equipment center down the street. They assume we all do the same thing and from their perspective I get it! I.T. as an industry has evolved a lot over the last 10 years, heck I would even say in the last 5 years.
While some computer support shops continue to do business like we’re in the ’90s still. I.T. firms like Underdog have evolved to meet the challenges of today’s businesses. Our approach to service is different, it is more proactive!
Proactive is a word that gets thrown out there a lot. Every I.T. support business is “proactive”, right! What their version of proactive looks like is not what we are talking about!
Let me try to explain! There are 3 types of I.T. support firms out in the world today and I don’t care how they describe themselves. All I.T. support firms fall in these 3 categories.
Type 1 – Reactive: The reactive I.T. firm waits for their customers to call with a problem. When you call they send a technician out either remote or onsite. They are billable per hour or they may sell you time blocks and “tick off” the time as you use it. Their selling point is you only pay for the time when you need it. They may provide some quasi-proactive support in the form of maintenance.
Type 2 – The MSP(Managed Service Provider): Since the early 2000s a new type of I.T. firm emerged. They promised their clients proactive support for a fixed price monthly. By investing in automated tools they were able to leverage their ability to monitor devices 24/7. These tools also gave them the ability to remotely connect to devices. In a time when it was more common to have technicians go onsite for problems. It allowed the MSP’s to do more with less. The technician could support dozens of machines simultaneously. In theory, your response rates would decrease. Some MSPs do an absolutely awesome job of supporting their clients. But many become as reactive if not more than their Type 1 counterparts.
Type 3 – The TSP(Trusted Service Provider): You can consider the TSP the next generation of the MSP. A more evolved and laser-focused version of an MSP. TSP’s like Underdog Computer and Network Support become our client’s virtual CIO. We focus less on fixing broken things and more on strategy. We help businesses align with a standard or framework. By doing so allows us to help our clients future proof their business. Keeps them more safe and stable.
It’s not that we don’t fix broken things anymore but by being the managed CIO there is less broken things to fix.
A CIO sounds intimidating as I often hear we don’t need a CIO we are a small 10 person business. Think of CIO as less of a Title are more of our process. The definition of a CIO: “Someone who strategizes how technology can provide business value. This is just part of what we do but it what makes us unique. No one else in our area is doing this!
